Not everyone is a “morning person,” that’s for sure. That doesn’t have to mean that you can’t take steps to make your mornings less painful, though. Try some of these 10 tips we’ve rounded up to see if you can’t make the AM feel a bit less like medieval torture.

Identify Step One

Set a goal for first thing in the morning. It could be a workout, letting a dog outside or as simple as putting both feet on the floor.

Have Something to Look Forward to

Many people love a cup of coffee, tea or even lemon water first thing. It’s a simple pleasure that can motivate you out of bed.

Turn Off the Notifications

Don’t let the day fly at you before you’re even ready to clock in. Make sure you’re not getting work emails or notifications first thing.

Avoid Endless Snooze

Did you wake up a few minutes before your alarm? You may have naturally come out of a sleep cycle. Instead of catching those extra moments of sleep, get up and start the day.

Longer Mornings

Longer mornings can help you feel like you actually have a life before work (or other responsibilities). See if you can squeeze in an earlier wake-up time, even if it’s just one day a week.

Fewer Decisions

Try to avoid having to make too many decisions too early in the day. Pick out your clothes the night before and pack your lunch.

Make the Bed

This can also help you feel better about climbing into it at the end of a long day, too.

Get Grateful

Spend a few moments on gratitude to boost your mood. It’s got the science behind it for improving your day.

Treat Yourself

Add in something a little extra to make your morning feel special. It doesn’t need to be big or expensive, it just needs to make you a little bit happier.

Teamwork

If you have kids or a partner, get them involved in planning out an easier morning!
